Reconciling your checking account monthly is imperative if you want to manage your money
responsibly. If you do not know how to do it, then ask someone at your bank to show you. This person
will be more than happy to take you through the process.
Bouncing a check is a strong warning that you’re not effectively managing your money. Unfortunately,
most young adults do this more than once. If you’re doing this, it probably means you’re not
reconciling your checking account monthly.
Overdraft fees (i.e., bounced checks) have increased significantly over the past few years. Expect to
pay $75 or more for a bounced check. It’s so easy not to ever have to do this. Just keep accurate track
of your checking account, and don’t write a check for something you can’t afford.
A minor reminder regarding banking is to use only your bank’s ATM. If you use those of others, you
will be charged a fee any where from $2 to $5 for each transaction. Basically, you’re paying for
nothing. Keep in mind, if you’re being fiscally responsible, every wasted dollar counts, so be smart
with the use of your bank account.
