In our modern times, we have grown accustomed to the idea of taking a specific
medicine to treat a specific symptom. But this often leads to unwanted side
effects as the medicines force the body to raise or lower things forcefully
creating imbalance in the body.
For instance, many people address having low energy by taking a high dose of
caffeine which does result in more energy, but then that energy comes crashing
down as the body recovers.
What if there was an herb so powerful, and so “intelligent” if you will, that
regardless of what health condition you have, it would go to work to fix exactly
what you needed fixed without throwing anything else out of balance?
There exists such an herb, but it’s not just a single herb. It’s an entire
classification of herbs which are called adaptogenic herbs, or tonic herbs in
Chinese medicine. These herbs are so safe to take, they can be treated as food
and used everyday.
A common example of this would be ginseng. A good quality, aged ginseng is
high in dual directional sapponins. These sapponins can work wherever and
however the body needs them most.
A good quality adaptogenic herb will raise what is low in the body, and lower
what is raised. That means for people low in energy, an herb can be energizing.
But people too high strung will be calmed down by the same herb. There’s no
worry these herbs won’t be a good fit for you as they adapt to your needs.
Adaptogenic herbs are the most valued for their ability to gradually heal the
body and promote longevity. They work in particular on helping the body cope
with stress as these herbs themselves often grow in and adapt to harsh
environments.
Outside of having good whole food nutrition, taking a good quality adaptogenic
herb or herbal formula is virtually essential in our high stressed and toxic world.
Here are a few of my favorites: Chaga: Chaga is a medicinal mushroom that
typically grows cold environments like Siberia on birch trees. This is one of the
most powerful and unique herbs for health a person can take. This is a powerful
tonic for boosting the immune system, fighting cancer, and promoting
longevity. If I could only supplement with one herb, it would be chaga.
Reishi: The only herb that can rival chaga. Reishi has shown incredible power
in fighting cancer and modulating the immune system. If I could only take two
herbs, it would be chaga and reishi.
Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha is an herb that has been shown to support the
thyroid, adrenals, and reduce excess cortisol. It’s also very affordable and is my
#1 herb of choice for everyone to take, even those on a budget, as it only costs a
few dollars a month.
Astragalus: Astragalus is a premiere herb for boosting the immune system,
strengthening muscles, and enhancing the metabolism. A great choice for those
wishing to prevent sickness.
Schizandra: One of the most balanced herbs, it nourishes every part of the
body. Overtime, this will strengthen anything that could be deficient leading to
radiant health.
Rhodiola: Grown in high altitudes, rhodiola is of particular significance for
athletes and those wishing to increase oxygenation. It helps improve endurance
and helps one adapt to high altitudes.
Cordyceps: Similar benefits as rhodiola, cordyceps has a powerful ability to
increase endurance and VO2 max while also providing similar benefits as chaga,
reishi, and other medicinal mushrooms.
Ginseng: The most common tonic herb in the world. There are a variety of
ginsengs with slightly different qualities. American ginseng is considered to be
the most balanced, and is heavily imported into China. Panax ginseng is
generally considered to be a bit more energizing.
Goji Berries: Goji berries are not only a tasty snack, but they help boost growth
hormone, improve mood, and boost levels of superoxide dismutase, one of the
body’s most powerful antioxidants.
There are of course a variety of other tonic and adaptogenic herbs which are all
worthwhile. Taking a combination formula allows one to get the benefits of a
multitude of these herbs. Talking to someone knowledgeable in herbalism may
help guide you to the best tonic herbs for your unique circumstances.
My #1 pick regardless of budget is chaga which is still very affordable at $25 a
bottle from Dragon Herbs. My pick for those on a budget is ashwagandha.
